Eurovision 2016 previews countdown: #37 GREECE – Argo – “Utopian Land”

Those of you familiar with Eurovision may be very surprised to see this country so far down the list – it’s Greece! After a decade of success which included their sole Eurovision win in 2005 and multiple top 10 finishes, they have struggled a little in the last two years (comparatively anyway) with lower placed finishes, yet they have still made the final and not had any trouble qualifying. Like Romania though, this year their 100% qualification record could be under very serious threat.

I will say this for Argo (formerly known as Europond but who changed ) they do bring some much needed ethnic instruments to the competition, which is to be welcomed, as very few countries have done that this year. Though aside from that positive, this is really quite a mess and the chorus in English is both repetitive and rather grating after a short while (in my view!)  They will undoubtedly pick up some votes from the large Greek diaspora, but could struggle otherwise.

The official video below is the only version of the song available, no live performances as yet, so we could yet see a stand out performance and staging which might rescue this from failure, but I think odds are against it this year.

Even a feta and olive oil dressing could not save this mess !

Agree this is a total mess. Rapped verses and a paint by numbers chorus.
