Eurovision 2016 previews countdown: #22 LITHUANIA – Donny Montell – “I’ve Been Waiting for This Night”

We finally come to our first Baltic country, and perhaps appropriately, it’s the Baltic nation that has had the least success in Eurovision to date – Lithuania. While Estonia and Latvia both have a Eurovision win in the bag, Lithuania has only reached the top 10 once. But, they are regular qualifiers and this year, one of their more successful past artists makes a return to the content – Donny Montell, he of a very literal interpretation of his 2012 entry “Love Is Blind” and some impressive on-stage acrobatics. Can he go one better in Stockholm and give Lithuania only its second top 10 finish?

Donny is certainly buffer than before and he’s been trying out some new hairstyles and colours judging by recent pictures and videos and he’s still bringing his acrobatics and unique dancing style back to the contest. However, I can’t see this bringing Lithuania level with Estonia and Latvia by winning the contest. It should qualify as it’s in the weaker semi-final and the three countries that have given the most points to Lithuania in its time in the contest are all voting in this semi-final (Ireland, Latvia and United Kingdom if you are curious as to the countries).

I wouldn’t say I dislike this song but there’s nothing about it that strongly appeals – it feels a bit like a mid-table song at Melodifestivalen. That familiar feel to it is not surprising either – the songwriters are both, you guess it, Swedish… Still, his stage performance should be entertaining, even if I suspect there’s a whiff of attempting to emulate Justin Bieber…

Great upbeat pop song, sung by an easy on the eye bloke. This should do really well.
