Moldova proved a surprise package to many last year, achieving their best ever result and third place in the final. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been such a surprise, it was catchy, it was fun, it was Moldovan and they were very polished, experienced and slick yet also clearly enjoying themselves. I feel that their entry this year is similar in many ways in those aspects – underrated initially by the fandom, but as the pre-parties have gone on, it’s very clear they have another accomplished and fun package. Will it maintain their recent success at the contest?
Here in the UK we might be braced for the “beast from the East” cold blast, but this weekend it’s a bumper set of national finals from no fewer than seven Eastern countries. Some of these finals contain a lot of songs so I’ve just pulled out my favourites from what I have seen, any particularly unusual ones, and collections of snippets of all the entries. Moldova is one of the more recent newcomers to Eurovision, but has definitely made an impact with some very stand out approaches to staging and costumes and exuberant performances by both singers and dancers. So, I’ve not found this top 5 too difficult to do!

Bringing familiar faces and fun at #27, we have Moldova. SunStroke Project represented Moldova back in 2010 in Oslo, and achieved a grand final place – more famously, it introduced the world to “Epic Sax Guy”, who became an internet sensation, and much copied and memed. 7 years on from their previous appearance in the contest, can SunStroke Project bring Moldova back to the final for the first time since 2013? At the moment we’re yo-yoing between Balkan and ex-Soviet countries. Back to a country which was part of the Soviet Union but culturally and historically is very close to Romania (a look at voting patterns will show that too!) – Moldova. In the past, they’ve provided some distinctly quirky entries but have failed to qualify for the final for the last two years? Can Lidia Isac turn their fortunes round?
