For a second year in a row, little Macedonia finishes in the Top 5 in the previews countdown – while last year wasn’t my own personal rankings, I would have had it in my Top 5 anyway, and a year on, Macedonia have done it again, making it into my Top 5. Can they overcome the problems they encounter in achieving qualification to the grand final this year? Continue reading “Eurovision 2018 previews countdown: #4 F.Y.R. MACEDONIA – Eye Cue – “Lost and Found””
Perhaps I should say “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” to give the country its formal full title, though in the contest itself, Eurovision shortens it to FYR Macedonia. They’ve competed 17 times so far, but are yet to crack the top 10 in a grand final. Nonetheless, they’ve had a few good songs, and expect to see them in this top 5! Finally into the top echelons of the countdown and we begin the top 5 with the top Balkan country. If you’d said (before we knew the songs) that Macedonia would be the top Balkan country, I’d never have believed you. But Jana has taken Macedonia to new heights in this chart. Can she do the same in the actual contest? Continue reading “Eurovision 2017 previews countdown: #5 FYR MACEDONIA – Jana Burceska – “Dance Alone””
Penultimate set of videos from London! Two artists returning to Eurovision here and an Icelandic-Balkan mix for these videos. Greta Salóme for Iceland and Kaliopi came back on stage to perform her 2012 song, plus Albania as well here. As expected, I had a fantastic time at the London Eurovision Preview Party 2016, held once again at Café de Paris.
I took some video clips of almost all of the performances. Do excuse the fact that I filmed them vertically rather than horizontally (I was holding a glass of wine in the other hand at the time) and also I appreciate it looks like I’m attempting to match J. J. Abrams for use of lens flare but one of the main stage backlights was directly shining towards me! We’re still in the Balkans and it’s someone who will be very familiar to Eurovision fans – Kaliopi! She’s back again after her success in taking Macedonia to the final in 2012. It’s a big Balkan ballad, the only real one in this year’s contest. It’s also only one of 3 songs to be fully sung with no English in it at all. Will that help take Kaliopi to the grand final once again?

A Balkan mix for this second of three posts featuring the seven returning artists to Eurovision this year. The most recognisable and memorable of the three will be Kaliopi (featured in the main image); the other two might be harder to recognise (for differing reasons!)
