Eurovision 2018 previews countdown: #15 FRANCE – Madame Monsieur – “Mercy”

We’re into the top 15 now, and it’s fair to say we have really reached my favourite songs of Eurovision 2018. It’s been a long while since we’ve had a big 5 country, and France is proving to be a huge fan favourite with their electropop song about the European migrant/refugee crisis. France have done well in the last couple of years, and signs are that this year will also bring success. But can they win for an elusive sixth time – they have been waiting since 1977 – the year before I was born!

SuRie sings “Mercy” by Madame Monsieur at Eurovision in Concert 2018

The Entente Cordiale is alive and well – with the vocalist of Madame Monsieur (France’s Eurovision 2018 representatives) falling ill just before the biggest of the preview events, SuRie, the UK’s representative for Eurovision this year, offered to take the stricken Émilie’s place and sing (with almost no time to learn the song and rehearse) at the concert. My friend Zoltan was the man on the ground and who I have to thank for sending this through to me. A true magical Eurovision moment!  Continue reading “SuRie sings “Mercy” by Madame Monsieur at Eurovision in Concert 2018″

5 party bangers from the Big 5 for New Year’s Eve

So it’s my last post of 2017, and thought I small selection of party bangers was in order. Now, there are so many to choose from, I thought I’d make it quicker and pick one party banger from each of the Big 5! Continue reading “5 party bangers from the Big 5 for New Year’s Eve”

My top 5 songs from…France

We come to one of the great Eurovision nations now, and a member of the Big 5, France. This is also the last of my Top 5s (well top 10 in this case) for the Big 5 as I will be doing something different for my home country, the United Kingdom. With 60 appearances, 5 winners, and being a founder member of the contest, it’s been a challenge to whittle this list down.  Continue reading “My top 5 songs from…France”

Eurovision 2017 previews countdown: #4 FRANCE – Alma – “Requiem”

Our penultimate big 5 country is one facing a big choice this Sunday in their presidential election – it’s last year’s chart toppers, France. 5 times winners, last year France went in as one of the favourites, and while they didn’t quite hit the peak they did in this chart last year, they still finished a strong sixth in the actual final, their best result since 2002. Can Alma repeat that renewed success this year with France’s 60th appearance at the contest? Continue reading “Eurovision 2017 previews countdown: #4 FRANCE – Alma – “Requiem””

Eurovision 2016 previews countdown: #1 FRANCE – Amir – “J’ai cherché”

We finally reach the top of the chart! It may not come as a huge surprise who has come top  as they have been topping most of the fan polls prior to rehearsals. They are a big 5 country and 5 times winners – France. If you think that the UK has struggled recently, France really really have, despite trying different musical styles and approaches each year. They have finished in the bottom 5 for the past 4 years, including coming last for the very first time in 2014. They should have no such worries on finishing so low this year, but can Amir give France a win for the first time since 1977?
