Eurovision 2019 previews countdown: #38 GERMANY – S!sters – “Sister”

Time for our first Big 5 country (though, big clue, will be a while before we see the next one), Germany have appeared at the contest more than any other country. They have two victories in their long history and many, many Eurovision classics among their entries. As you may infer though, I don’t think this year’s will be joining that pantheon…

I will confess I did call it wrong last year – at least in the sense that Germany did very well in the end, finishing an impressive 4th place. I’m still not a fan of last year’s song, but this year’s is even lower in my ranking (sorry!) It was a bit of a surprise (to the fandom) this won their national final, but while in the voting groups on the show it didn’t do well among the “Eurovision fans” panel, it did win both the international jury vote and public vote.

It falls into that category of Eurovision duet where you have the two singing/shouting at each other in close proximity. I don’t think it’s a horrible song, but I can’t say I like the harmonies that much and the verses are very wordy. Contrary to the song title, the two singers are not actual sisters, but it’s a song they do put their hearts into, though I can’t get over those leather trousers one of the wears – it just disturbs me too much!

I do think that this could struggle for Germany – if they have a so-so song like this, like the UK, it often translates into bottom 5 placings and I think this could be a candidate for last place in the grand final this year. Some juries may go for it, but I’m not convinced it can pick up much televote wise.

    Reminds slightly of t.A.T.u.

Quite like this song. Definitely in my top 20.
