Eurovision 2019 previews countdown: #39 MONTENEGRO – D mol – “Heaven”

Swiftly moving on from our first Balkan country, our second one comes up immediately – the picturesque nation of Montenegro. Relative newcomers (as an independent country) to Eurovision, they have struggled both in the contest and also in the rankings in these pre-contest previews. Sorry to say but that’s been the case again this year.

They held a national final again, though I’m afraid to say that my favourite to win, Andrea Demirović (who represented Montenegro in 2009) lost out to the 6 piece band, D mol. It was one of those national finals weekends when most of my (and the fandom’s) favourites lost out…

That said, D mol are a young, good looking and smiley bunch, it’s just that their song “Heaven” is pretty mediocre. D mol means “D minor” in Croatian and while that refers to the musical scale, I could also use it for the grading of this song. A revamp has helped though, with extra (Balkan) instrumentation, and it’s not an unpleasant song. The music video features an old man with beard playing a hitherto unknown traditional folklore instrument (they clearly have watched “Love Love Peace Peace”.

Qualification chances I have to say are very slim indeed. They may get some points from Serbia and Slovenia in their semi-final but I think more points may be hard to come by.
