For a second year in a row, little Macedonia finishes in the Top 5 in the previews countdown – while last year wasn’t my own personal rankings, I would have had it in my Top 5 anyway, and a year on, Macedonia have done it again, making it into my Top 5. Can they overcome the problems they encounter in achieving qualification to the grand final this year?
I really hope that this can qualify. They had such a great song last year, and while Jana sung it perfectly well live, it just didn’t seem to translate well to the Eurovision stage plus the staging, camera angles etc. just weren’t as good as many other countries. They’ve given another great song this year – mixing two, or even three, styles/songs together – reggae followed by and EDM (dance) chorus. It’s different, but also something I listen to again and again. The lead singer can definitely sing live (always a bonus) and some of the lyrics will definitely appeal to the large gay audience of Eurovision…
But will it qualify? Well, it does have a bit of a hill to climb – Macedonia does have Croatia and Albania in this semi-final but they will need Europe-wide support to get through. How the staging is done is critical for their success – first rehearsals have surfaced some doubts, but they have time to tighten things up, make improvements and with luck if they do that, the quality of the song and the vocal performance will see this through.
