Just missing out on a spot in the top 20 are last year’s hosts – Austria. They put on a genuinely “amazing show” (“amazing show” is the phrase every voting spokesperson uses but it really was a wonderfully staged contest in Vienna). If you are diabetic, a word of warning before you watch their entry for this year as it’s a sugary sweet song sung by a very sweet girl. It’s an intriguing entry in this year’s contest. Sugar sweet it might be, but it’s turned into a huge fan favourite at the preview events – check out Zoë’s live performance at the London preview party below. The crowd reaction was incredible, something that was also the case the week previously in Amsterdam. There isn’t another song similar to this in the contest this year, and it also stands out as being just one of three songs not to have at least some English in them. How will it do? A difficult question to answer. There is a possibility of this being what is usually described as a “fanw*nk” song – those songs that Eurofans get very excited about but then either flop or else don’t do as well as expected. The two obvious examples are Kate Ryan (Belgium) in 2006 whose “Je t’adore” didn’t make the final in a huge shock and Hera Björk (Iceland) in 2010 whose “Je ne sais quoi” qualified for the final but finished unexpectedly low in 19th. Both songs had French language titles – an omen/curse?

On the other hand, this could be like Serbia from last year when Bojana Stamenov’s uplifting “Beauty Never Lies” performed far better than originally expected. A song that didn’t seem too popular in the YouTube rankings I did (it finished in around 31st), came to life at the preview events, gaining popularity as the competition drew closer, and the positivity and message of the song and Bojana’s live performance gave Serbia a deserved top 10 place in the final. She’s in a tough semi final so will be interesting to see if the fans’ enthusiasm translates to enough votes to send her through.
