Eurovision 2016 previews countdown: #31 FINLAND – Sandhja – “Sing It Away”

We finally reach our first Nordic country – Finland. Finland lag behind their Swedish, Norwegian and Danish neighbours in terms of Eurovision success so perhaps not such a shock that they take up last place amongst the Nordics in this list as well. It’s 10 years since Lordi took Eurovision by storm and became Finland’s first and only winners. Can Sandhnja make it two wins for the Finns?
It’s going to be a tough ask. Finland have been given the unenviable slot of first song to perform in the first semi-final. Recent Eurovision history has shown that it’s exceptionally difficult to qualify from that position , unless you are a very strong contender and potential winner (like Armenia in 2014). Added to that it’s in the semi-final of death and it’s hard to see this going through to the final.

This isn’t a very strong contender I would say. It’s a bouncy enough number but tends to be quite forgettable. It bears a passing resemblance to a certain Spanish entry this year but isn’t in the same league as that in terms of recognition or popularity. Sandhja herself is more interesting than her song – her father is Finnish but her mum is Indo-Guyanese (someone from Guyana whose heritage is from India).
