Eurovision 2016 previews countdown: #32 IRELAND – Nicky Byrne – “Sunlight”

It’s the turn now of the most successful of Eurovision countries – Ireland. They may have won a record seven times, but the last 15 years have been tough for Ireland. If you think the UK has had its struggles, feel for Ireland too who have only qualified for the final five times in the last 10 years, and they haven’t qualified since 2013 when they came last in the grand final. Can Nicky Byrne, former member of Westlife, turn Ireland’s fortunes around?

On the evidence of this ranking you might say no, but I think the YouTube charts may have been somewhat harsh on this and Nicky’s popularity and fame may help boost Ireland’s chances. Nicky is no stranger to Eurovision, having been Ireland’s spokesperson, presenting the Irish votes at the final, for the last three contests. This time he’ll be the one receiving the votes – or that is Ireland’s hope anyway.

What of the song? Well it’s mid to uptempo song with an easy to rememberchorus and bounces along very nicely. It is just perhaps a little bit bland…? Chances of qualification are boosted by being in the weaker semi, as well as fact that both the UK and Australia are voting in that second semi, so Ireland should pick some votes up from us and the Aussies, especially the Brits, given Westlife’s huge success in the UK. If it does get through, I’m not sure I see it on the left hand side of the board – it’s no “Lipstick” I’m afraid. But it would be good to see Ireland back in the final, so best of luck to Nicky Byrne!

Can’t believe this song is so low down in the ratings. Its one of the only songs that actually stand out.
