We move on to our very first Balkan country in the countdown and this year the Balkan wooden spoon goes to Montenegro. They’ve only qualified twice in six appearances and those both coming in the last 2 contests. How did they manage to qualify? Well, they went full on with native language, Balkan ballads… This year though, they are singing in English and it’s definitely no ballad!
They’re not a bad looking bunch actually but I very much doubt that will save this from a semi-final exit. The hook isn’t strong enough and the music is too far removed from what would do well in Eurovision. And being sung in English, I think it will struggle even to get a big block of Balkan votes. I’ll be seeing them live for myself in just a few days time so will see how they come across.
One small fact to add – the keyboardist, Bojan Jovović, represented Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 as part of the band “No Name”. He finished 7th in the grand final but I don’t think he’ll be seeing a repeat of that this year I’m afraid.
